The work of The Institute for Medicine and Public Health is conducted by its member and affiliated Centers, Institutes and Programs. This growing community of researchers, teachers and experts are working collaboratively to address important health care issues, generate innovative hypotheses, and expedite discovery and dissemination of new knowledge. The Institute serves to motivate, educate and support investigators and educators who will translate new evidence into health care practice, thereby improving personal and community health.
Center for Asthma Research
Investigates the interplay of environmental, physiological, genetic, and other factors that can lead to the development of asthma and related conditions.
Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society
Provides leadership in education, research, and clinical service concerning the ethical, legal, and social dimensions of medicine, health care, and health policy through multidisciplinary exploration of individual and social values, cultural dynamics, and legal and professional standards that impact clinical practice and biomedical research.
Center for Effective Health Communication
Improves the communication of health-related information between and among patients, physicians, students, and other healthcare professionals, and the general public through original investigation, education, and dissemination of effective strategies.
Center of Excellence in Clinical Research Training
Fosters innovative, rigorous education in the conduct of clinical research.
Center for Health Promotion and Disease Management
Works to promote health and well-being through a focus on preventive medicine and healthy lifestyles.
Center for Health Services Research
Seeks to improve health through interdisciplinary research into the conduct, organization, outcomes, and effectiveness of all aspects of health care.
Center for Medicine, Health and Society
Explores links between academic medicine, the humanities, and the social sciences through innovative curricular programs that examine health and health care in social and cultural contexts.
Center for Patient Healthcare Behavior
Seeks to understand patient-oriented factors that impact health care and health-related decisions.
Center for Professional Health
Provides clinicians with educational tools regarding substance abuse, professionalism, distressed/disruptive behaviors and improved patient safety.
Center for Quality Aging
Develops innovative interventions to improve quality of care and quality of life for older adults in hospital and emergency, assisted-living, post-acute, and long-term care settings.
Center for Research and Innovation in Systems Safety
Conducts basic and applied research in healthcare informatics, patient safety and clinical quality, and designs and evaluates informatics user interfaces, care processes and medical technology across Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Center for Surgical Quality and Outcomes Research
Seeks to improve access to and quality of care and to optimize clinical outcomes for patients with conditions that are treated with surgical procedures.
Child and Adolescent Health Services Research Program
Conducts leading edge research into health care for children and young adults.
Evidence-Based Practice Center
Synthesizes scientific evidence to improve quality and effectiveness in health care through systematic reviews of evidence in clinical medicine, social and behavioral science, and economics.
Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center
Expands knowledge of the aging process, diseases associated with aging, and health systems research with a focus on drug utilization, disease prevention, and quality improvement/patient safety.
Institute for Community Health
Aims to reduce the disparities among racial/ethnic and socioeconomic groups in disease incidence, process of healthcare and outcomes from care through collaborative research between Vanderbilt University and Meharry Medical College.
Institute for Research on Men's Health (IRMH)
Conducts research that bridges social sciences, humanities, medicine and public health to examine the role of sex, gender and other characteristics in improving men's health behaviors and health outcomes
Office for Community Engagement
Builds academic and community partnerships to promote integration of research efforts in the context of community health priorities to foster the real-world applicability of research results.
T32 Health Services Research Training Program
Provides opportunities for investigators to enhance their understanding of health services research.
VA Quality Scholars Program
Aims to produce the next generation of recognized scholars and leaders in health care quality improvement dedicated to improving veterans’ and general health care and excellence in teaching about health care quality.
Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center
Enhances and expands understanding of the distribution and determinants of disease, promotes the translation of research into cost-effective strategies of disease prevention and health care delivery, and trains independent investigators in epidemiology research and disease prevention.
Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health
Advances health and development in the world’s resource-limited regions through service and capacity-building, training of Vanderbilt and in-country health professionals, and pragmatic research of public health importance.
Vanderbilt Master of Public Health Program
Trains public health scientists and professionals dedicated to improving the public health through didactic coursework, a practicum, and mentored research. The two-year, CEPH-accredited interdisciplinary program offers two tracks: Epidemiology and Global Health.
